Paramount started working on a sequel to G.I. Joe not long after the movie arrived in cinemas in 2009, but while with most franchises the studio try to fast-track a follow-up, they seem to be taking their time with this one. Indeed many had wondered whether the entire idea had been dropped, until a few months ago it was reported that director Stephen Sommers would return to helm G.I. Joe 2.
However now it appears that announcement may have been a little premature, as the LA Times reports that, ‘Two agents who represent other filmmakers have said theyd recently been approached about their clients coming on to helm the movie and were told that Sommers would not be getting behind the camera. Paramount declined to comment.’
Many had been surprised by the earlier news that Sommers would return, as there were reports of trouble on the set of the first film, and rumours of studio interference by Paramount, who weren’t keen on what Sommers was doing. However after the movie grossed over $300 million worldwide, despite negative reviews, it seemed everyone had buried the hatchet.
However while it appears Paramount is looking for a new director, there’s no news on when they want to make the movie, or when it might reach cinemas. Presumably there’s a time limit of the contracts of Channing Tatum et al, so they’d better get a move on.
It’s not clear either what Sommers is moving on to do. While he’s been working on a Tarzan reboot, he has nothing that seems like it’ll be ready to shoot anytime soon.
