Gareth Edwards got much praise for his recent Monsters, not least for making the sci-fi flick for hardly any money at all (all-in it cost in the low six-figures), and yet still filling it with clever effects and tension. However now he’s got a much bigger gig, as THR reports that he’s landed Godzilla, which Legendary Pictures, the company behind 300, Watchmen and The Dark Knight, has been putting together.
Edwards always intended Monsters as a showpiece to attract bigger work, and it seems he’s succeded. While Legendary picked up the Godzilla rights last March, it’s still fairly early days on the project, as while it’s known some work has been done on the look of the monster for this bid budget do-over, it appears that the script, written by David Callahan, is being junked, and that Edwards will now work with an as-yet unhired screenwriter on a new version.
There’s no news on when we might see the movie, but if Monsters is anything to go by, Edwards will create something a hell of a lot more worthwhile than Roland Emmerich did when he took on Godzilla.
