After many anaylsts blamed snow storms for a soft Christmas weekend at the US box office, there was hope things would pick up over the New Year festivities, but with no new releases and seemingly little that truly captured audiences’ imaginations, it was another relatively weak weekend.
Little Fockers topped the box office for a second time, taking another $26.3 million. That allowed it to pass the $100 million mark, which may not seem bad in 10 days, but by this point after its release, Meet The Fockers had already taken $162 milllion. So while Little Fockers may not be a flop, it’s certainly not exciting people like its predecessors.
True Grit meanwhile is doing very well – for a western and a Coen brothers movie, that is. It added another $26.3 million, taking it to $86.8 million overall, which makes it the top earning Coen movie in the US ever, and one of the biggest westerns of the last 20 years. It’s great news, as many had expected it to only find an audience if it scored a lot of Oscar nominations, but it’s done it on its own.
Gulliver’s Travels meanwhile continued to disappoint. In its first full weekend (its Christmas day release meant it missed out on the Friday of the Xmas weekend) it racked up only $9.1 million, taking it to just $27 million overall. That meant the Jack Black film couldn’t outpace the fourth weekend of Voyage Of The Dawn Treader or the sixth weekend of Tangled. There’s little doubt now it’s gonna bomb.
With no Avatar wowing audiences, its likely to be a much quieter first few weeks of the year at the US box office than in 2010, but we’ll have to wait and see if any surprise successes come along. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of Dec 31st-Jan 2nd.
