While it’s been in the works for over a year, recently the film adaptation of the hair metal Broadway musical Rock Of Ages has started trying to pull its cast together, with talk of Mary J. Blige signing on, as well as Tom Cruise being in line for a role. While the Cruise news sounded dubious when it was first rumoured, EW reports that Cruise is now officially in talks for the film and so we may well get hear him blasting out a tune or two, in the supporting role of rock star Stacee Jaxx.
He’s not the only one either, as Gwyneth Paltrow has also been offered a major role. It’s a bit early to say whether she’s going to take it, as when EW spoke to her, she said, “It sounds cool. I just got the script and I will read it on the plane home tomorrow. But it sounds like it could be fun. Another person who could be in the mix is Alec Baldwin, whom The Wrap reports has been offered the supporting role of Dennis Dupree (a part the studio was previously rumoured to want Will Ferrell for). If they get all of those stars, it’s certainly gonna be an interesting mix!
The musical will be surfing the Mamma Mia! wave, as rather than featuring original music, it takes 80s rock anthems by the likes of Journey, Twisted Sister, Joan Jett and Bon Jovi, and uses them to tell the story of two people who meet and fall in love at a nightclub, while also trying to save the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll club from destruction, and working out how they can follow their dreams. Adam Shankman (Hairspray) will direct, with shooting hopefully starting in March.
