While it was presented as a race between The Tourist and The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader as to which would top the US box office charts, most expected the Narnia movie to win. Indeed it did, although with a budget of $155 million and an opening weekend of only $24.5 million, Fox isn’t likely to be cheering too hard, especially as they took the risk of taking over the franchise when Disney dropped it following a disappointing return on Prince Caspian.
It’s less than half the first weekend take of either of the previous Narnia movies. However they can take heart from the fact that outside the US, it took over $80 million, which is a far more respectable figure.
The Tourist came in second with a less than astounding $17 million, which was about average for that sort of film (although less than Knight & Day from from earlier this year), but a lot less than a lot of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie movies have opened with recently. As it cost $100 million to make, it may struggle to recoup its costs.
However while those were the only newly released movies in the top 10, Black Swan made its first appearance after adding another 72 screens to its limited tally. It took $3.3 million on only 90 screens, for an astonishing average of $37,000 per screen. That’s more than five times as much per screen as any other movie in the top 10. It certainly bodes well for the film’s future, especially as there’s talk of Oscars.
