Following the success of District 9, it’s taken Neill Blomkamp a while to get ready for his follow-up, presumably because while earlier this year he signed a deal with MRC that gives him funding and complete control over his movies, he wants to ensure everything is perfect before he puts his cast together. However now he’s looking for his stars, and as we reported last week, Sharlto Copley has already signed on.
Now Deadline reports that Blomkamp is in talks with Matt Damon to join the movie, although it’s certainly not a done deal yet, as negotiations have only just begun, and Blomkamp won’t have the sort of cash to spend that Damon can normally command. However the actor does have a reputation for dropping his price if he likes a project, so hopefully they’ll get a deal together.
As for the movie itself, it’s still shrouded in secrecy, with little more known than that it’s set in the far future on another planet and, like District 9, is filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film.
The plan is to get the cast together and then take the movie to potential distributors, with filming happening sometime next year.
