There was much huffing and puffing last week when it emerged that Warner Bros had signed up to back the long-rumoured big-screen Buffy reboot, with many fans in uproar that anyone would even think about touching Joss Whedon’s TV series except for the man himself. Indeed Whedon talked to E! about it and made it sound like no one had even consulted him about the Vampire slaying makeover, but that he was resigned to it happening.
However it appears that’s not quite how it was, as THR reports that when the idea of a Buffy reboot was first mooted last year, rights holder Kuzui Enterprises and Vertigo, whose idea it was, approached Whedon about returning to his most famous creation. However Joss decided against it as he wanted to work on other projects – and of course now he’s planning to make The Avengers.
So while fans may still be angry, just remember that whatever film we end up with (my bet is Buffy goes all Twilight), Whedon did have the chance to do it himself, but declined.
