Being Doctor Who’s companion certainly seems good for your career. It turned Billie Piper from washed-up teen pop star into a legitimate actress and now it appears it’s taking Karen Gillan to the big screen. According to Deadline, Gillan, who is the new Doctor’s time-travelling friend, has signed up to star in Romeo and Brittany, with David Baddiel directing.
The plot of the movie isn’t a million miles from Doctor Who, as it also involves time travel, with Gillan playing a spiky, modern New Jersey high school teenager who wakes in the 13th Century Verona, with all the people she knows from her 21st Century life playing character from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
Gillan isn’t the only one cast, as Gillian Anderson will play the dual roles of Gillans mother and the Nurse, while Robert Sheehan, star of cult E4 TV comedy The Misfits, will play the school nerd who becomes her Romeo.
It’ll be Baddiel’s first big-screen directing gig, following his successful screenwriting venture, The Infidel. While the movie is set in America, it’s definitely a rather British affair, with even Gillian Anderson living in the UK. The $7 million flick will start shooting nexy May.
