It was good and bad news for the Denzel Washington and Chris Pine flick Unstoppable this weekend at the US box office. It was first out of the gate, taking more money on Friday than any other movie, but once schools were out and it got to the weekend proper, Megamind came roaring back to take the number 1 spot on the box office chart.
Megamind took $30 million versus $23.5 million for new release Unstoppable. Its a passable start, although with a $100 million budget, Fox might have hoped for more, even if it is in line with the recent performance of both Denzel Washington and director Tony Scotts pics.
There were two other movies in the top 10, both of which opened softer than some had expected. The alien invasion flick Skyline took $11.6 million, which may not sound great for a movie of that genre, but seeing as its thought it only cost $10 million to make, the backers arent likely to be crying.
Morning Glory, starring Rachel McAdams and Harrison Ford, opened in fifth place with $9.6 million, which is not abysmal, but considering the saturation coverage it received in the US and lack of competition, is still weaker than many had expected.
However in many respects, this weeks releases were just clearing the decks for Harry Potter, which is almost certain to dominate cinemas from Friday onwards. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of November 12th-14th.
