Ever since the rights were picked up last April, there’s been talk of a remake of Troma’s most famous creation, The Toxic Avenger. Well, now Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink is stepping into the horror genre, signing up to direct the movie, according to Deadline.
Pink will also co-write the script with Daniel C. Mitchell. Here’s what Pink had to say about the project: “The Toxic Avenger is exactly what the country–wait, that’s not big enough–what the world needs right now.”
In case you’ve missed the delights of Toxie, he first appeared in a 1984 movie, which spawned several sequels, a cartoon series and comic book. The franchise is about a man named Melvin, a janitor who is constantly hassled by the jocks at his gym. One day they dump him in a vat of toxic waste, which transformed him into a hideous but hulking creature who vows to clean up the streets of New Jersey.
Troma owners Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz are teaming up with Kerry Foster. Akiva Goldsman, Richard Saperstein and Charlie Corwin to produce the remake. As yet there’s no studio involvement.
