A couple of weeks ago we reported that Tarsem Singh, director of The Cell, The Fall and the upcoming Immortals, had been offered the job of directing The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, which Bret Ratner will produce. Now THR confirms Tarsem for the job, as he’s finalised a deal to direct.
Before you get too confused, this is a different movie from Snow White And The Huntsman, which is busy casting with Tom Hardy, Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron rumoured for major roles (Disney also has a Snow White based movie in development, although it’s a modern update). Whether all these film will actually go into production is another matter, as currently the race is on with each hoping the other will blink and decide not to go forward. That said, with a lot of money already invested, it’s more than possible that we could have a bit of a profusion of Snow Whites in 2012, with up to three different films, each with a slightly different focus, arriving in cinemas.
It should be noted though, that while the Ratner produced movie has been known as The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, THR refers to it as a currently ‘untitled movie based on the Brothers Grimm story’, so it’s probably getting a new name. Melissa Wallack wrote the script, which begins whenthe evil stepmother kills Snow Whites father and destroys the kingdom. Our heroine then bands together with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarves to reclaim what is rightly hers.
The hope is to start shooting in March, a couple months after Snow White and the Huntsman is scheduled to begin, although with both needing extensive effects work, it’s still uncertain which would hit cinemas first.
