At the moment, it’s probably best to treat this as a slightly conventient rumour rather than anything substantial, but actress Charlize Theron may be taking on the villain role in Snow White and the Huntsman. This news comes just days after it was suggested Angelina Jolie was first choice for the role.
The reason I’d suggest a note of caution isn’t because Jolie is likely to take the role (knowing her, she probably won’t, and The Playlist suggests she’ll be too busy in post-production on the Bosnian war movie she’s directing anyway), but because it all sounds a little convenient. Along with the Jolie rumours came news that Tom Hardy was being lined up for the role of the Huntsman, and he’s only available because shooting on Mad Max: Fury Road has been delayed until 2012.
And who was supposed to be Hardy’s Fursy Road co-star and therefore also has a hole in her dance card? Charlize Theron. It could therefore be one of those situations where some unrelated facts have been brought together and turned into an unsubstantiated rumour, but it’s also possible she is indeed involved. Expect to hear more soon, as the movie is being fast-tracked to start shooting early next year.
The movie, which will be helmed by first-time director Rupert Sanders from a script by Evan Daugherty, is a new take on the classic Snow White tale. Tom Hardy will, if cast, play the Huntsman, who is hired by the evil queen Ravenna, the role Charlize Theron is eyeing, to find her stepdaughter. When the Huntsman learns that Ravenna really wants the stepdaughter killed, he becomes her mentor as they plan their escape from Ravenna’s clutches.
