Although it all seems a tad speculative at the moment, in a Deadline report about a planned Twilight Zone movie getting a new writer in the form of relative newcomer Jason Rothenberg, they also mention he’s working on the screenplay for a remake of Colossus: The Forbin Project, which producer Brian Grazaer has been developing for the last three years as a potential directing project for Ron Howard.
The Deadline report also causally mentions that Will Smith is attached to star in the film, which is the first we’ve heard of this. They describe The Forbin Project as ‘a contemporary Frankenstein story about the world’s first sentient computer and the misunderstood genius who gains power over the world because of it’. The 1970 original was one of the first movies to take on the now familiar film idea that one day computers would become so powerful they’d try to take over (something Smith’s already looked at in I,Robot), and indeed, it may be difficult to make it seem even vaguely original due to the amount of similar movies that have come since.
However, Smith does like to attach himself to thousands of things, only selecting a very few to make. So just because he’s onboard now, is no guarantee he’ll make the movie.
