He may not exactly be the most prolific of directors, but with The Cell and The Fall Tarsem Singh certainly created some stunning imagery that’s difficult to forget. While previously seen as an idiosyncratic director who’s off in his own world (despite his pedigree in commercials), ever since he was announced as the director of the Greek mythology epic Immortals, which will reach cinemas nect year, Hollywood has seemed to warm to him.
Now it appears that he may be the man producer Bret Ratner wants to helm The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. There was talk recently of Jean-Pierre Jeunet being in talks for the job, but now Vulture says Tarsem is the one who’s officially been offered the job. However no deal is in place yet.
Ratner and Relativity Media are now in a major rush to get their Snow White tale together, due to competition from other projects. Despite announcing their film first – which will be based of the story as the Brothers Grimm wrote it – Universal recently paid huge amounts of cash for the spec script Snow White and the Huntsman, which tells the story from latter’s point of view, while Disney is working on an updated version of the story, called Snow White and the Seven. It’s unlikely both Universal and Relativity’s films will get made, so at the moment they’re playing chicken and seeing who can get their film off the ground first.
