Back in the day, Warner Bros. was the only studio to even begin to rival Disney for its band of classic cartoon characters, with the Looney Tunes gang starring in an endless run of great shorts. However while Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck remain popular, they’re adventures aren’t seen as much by the current generation of youngsters.
Over the years Warner has tried doing something about that, but live-action/hand-drawn animation mixes like Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back In Action haven’t proven that popular. However Alvin and the Chipmunks showed that old characters can potentially do very well if you shove in a bit of CGI, and so that’s what Warner is planning to do with Bugs.
Accrdring to Deadline, Warner Bros has hired Elf scribe David Berenbaum to come up with a script for a Bugs Bunny live action-CGI movie. It’s very early days, with Warner having not even assigned a producer yet, but it underlines how they feel there’s a lot of potential in the Looney Tune characters that isn’t being exploited. Indeed, they’ve recently got back into the animated shorts game as well, producing a trilogy of 3D cartoons, one of which played before Cats & Dogs 2, while the others are planned for Legend Of The Guardians and Yogi Bear.
