It has been, as you may have noticed, as insanely slow news week in the world of film, which has allowed rumours that would normally have been roudly ignored to gain far more traction than they would have otherwise. One of these is a report on Superman Homepage that Warner Brother’s current thinking is that the best man to direct the planned new Superman movie is Christopher Columbus.
Perhaps unsurprisingly there’s already been a lot of scepticism around the report, partly because with Chris Nolan overseeing the project, many have wondered how Columbus’ hit the plot point style would fit with the darker take the franchise is supposedly gotaking. After all, the likes of the first two Harry Potter movies and Percy Jackson are light years away from what Nolan has been doing. Then again, if this is what the studio want, they’re not exactly renowned for being good at matching directors to projects and often need to be guided in.
As yet, it’s very early days in the Superman process, with David S. Goyer having come up with the idea and writing the script, and Nolan overseeing development. According to Superman Homepage’s inside source, “David Goyer really wanted to direct but nobody from either studio think he’s good in that arena,” which is why they’re supposedly looking at Columbus. To be honest I’d be shocked if the journeyman director got the job, so file this one as a big fat rumour for now.
