Although the Independence Day holiday weekend isn’t quite over yet, the estimated figures are in for the Friday-Sunday period and as expected, The Twilight Saga leads the way with $69 million. That may not sound too massive, but since its release last Wednesday, its taken $161 million, which is certainly nothing to sniff at.
The film has followed the pattern of New Moon, having a truly enormous opening day, before dropping back to more manageable, but still pretty good, levels from them on. Eclipse’s Wednesday total of $68 million was the second biggest single day take ever, beaten only by New Moon’s $72 million. It means that overall Eclipse has had a slightly softer opening than its predecessor, but certainly nothing the makers are going to be worrying about.
M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender took second place with $40 million, which suggests the decent early buzz about the film and the broad fanbase of the cartoon its based on, have trumped the fact it’s now one of the worst reviewed movies of the year, currently standing at a lowly 8% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Those were the only new films making their debut in the top 10, although Cyrus, starring John C. Reilly and Jonah Hill, expanded the number of screens it was on and made it’s first appearance in the list at number 10 in its third weekend. However as it only took $770,000, it just shows there’s a bit of a lack of depth in the box office at the moment.
Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of July 2nd-4th, 2010.
