It was pretty much launch day yesterday for The Green Lantern, with the first images and trailer making their debut, and Seth Rogen doing the interview rounds in the US to promote them. And the film had more riding on the launch than most, as with the movie’s shoot endlessly delayed due to script issues and changing directors, the release being pushed back from this summer to next January, as well as reports a couple of months ago that the studio thought the film would be a disaster (which Sony officially denied, but had done their damage), The Green Hornet has had the whiff of being a project in trouble, which is never good.
However the first images and trailer certainly suggest the movie has a lot of promise, and they should go a long way to allaying people’s fears. In the film Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) is the son of LA’s most prominent and respected media magnate and perfectly happy to maintain a directionless existence on the party scene until his father (Tom Wilkinson) mysteriously dies, leaving Britt his vast media empire. Striking an unlikely friendship with one of his father’s more industrious and inventive employees, Kato (Jay Chou), they see their chance to do something meaningful for the first time in their lives: fight crime. But in order to do this, they decide to become criminals themselves protecting the law by breaking it, Britt becomes the vigilante The Green Hornet as he and Kato hit the streets. The film is due out January 14th, 2011.
