On June 25th, Optimum Releasing is bringing Jean-Luc Godard’s classic Breathless (A bout de souffle) back to cinemas to celebrate its 50th Anniversary. It’s hard to believe it’s been half a century since the French new wave first made a splash, and Breathless certainly made a bigger splash than most, helped by a wonderful story from Francois Truffaut and the fact Godard was new to cinema and hadn’t completely disappeared up his own ass by this point. In the film a small time thief kills a policeman and then gets a young America jornalism student to help him evade capture. It’s both a celebration of the movies and a comment on Hollywood, and was renowned on its first release for it bold and fresh visual style.
