While there’s been a lot of talk about Transformers 3 over the last few months as it geared up for shooting, not least the departure of Megan Fox (although it’s said she’s been seen on the set, suggesting she may have a cameo to wrap up her role), we haven’t heard virtually anything about the plot.
However now USA Today has gone digging on the film’s set and discovered a few details about the movie. First up, while there had been a growing assumption the film would be shot in 3D, that’s now been confirmed. In the article Michael Bay also apologises for the second film, saying “I’ll take some of the criticism. It was very hard to put (the sequel) together that quickly after the writers’ strike (of 2007-08),” with producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura adding “We tried to do too many things in the second movie, which didn’t give enough time in any one of them. We were constantly jumping to the next piece of information, the next place.” However they promise the third film will be better.
Bay even acknowledges that The Fallen was “kind of a (expletive) character”, but for the third film they’re going for a bad guy that makes more sense – Shockwave – the robot cyclops-turned-laser-cannon, who in the original 1980s cartoon became the dictator of Cybertron after the other Autobots and Decepticons left for Earth.
They’re also trying to drop the ‘dorky comedy’ for Transformers 3, meaning the Autobot twins are ‘basically gone’, although John Turturro returns for comic relief.
USA Today adds that ‘Plot details are under wraps, but it delves into the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the USA, suggesting there was a hidden Transformers role in it all that remains one of the planet’s most dangerous secrets. “The movie is more of a mystery,” Bay says. “It ties in what we know as history growing up as kids with what really happened.”‘
Finally, the film is being pitches as the end of a trilogy, and will have a not of finality about it, with Bay saying, “As a trilogy, it really ends. It could be rebooted again, but I think it has a really killer ending.”
