Poor old Tom Cruise. Once the mightiest of all movie stars, in the last few years the most successful thing he’s done is putting on a bald cap and fat suit for a comedy cameo as loud-mouthed, rude studio executive Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder.
When that movie came out, there was talk of spinning off Les into his own film, but nothing really came of it. However the popularity of the character hasn’t waned, with the result that he was a big part of the MTV Movie Awards, both in pre-recorded clips and onstage dancing with J-Lo. E! spoke to the bald-capped Cruise backstage after his explosive performance and asked him whether there was still hope for a Les Grossman movie, to which he replied, “We’re working on it. Yup, we’re working on it.”
While that’s not exactly confirmation that writers have been hired and Tom’s sutdiously overseeing the project, it’s a good sign that Les will get his own film. It’s probably not a bad idea, as putting on a fat suit worked for Eddie Murphy when he was in a bit of a career slump, so why not Tom Cruise? It certainly makes him look less po-faced and serious than he normally comes across, which can only be a good thing.
