In recent weeks all rumours have pointed to Brad Pitt as the man David Fincher wanted to star in his English-language remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, based on the book by Stieg Larsson. However it seems Pitt has either passed on the project, the rumours aren’t true, or Fincher is playing the field, as it’s now being reported that Daniel Craig is in talks for the role.
While Deadline describes Craig and Fincher flirting with each other, with no actual offer made, The Wrap says the 007 actor is nearing a deal to take on the role of journalist/investigator Mikael Blomkvist (who’ll probably get a less Scandinavian name in the US version), who looks into a 40-year-old possible murder, which takes him and computer hacker Lisbeth Salander into the world of the dysfunctional, island-bound Vanger family.
Sony’s official line is that, “We have not offered any roles to anyone nor are we negotiating with anyone,” but it seems Craig is indeed in talks with the studio. It also means that there’s no chance 007 will rev up again this year after being postponed due to MGM’s difficulties, as Girl With The Dragon Tattoo starts shooting in October, meaning the actor won’t now be free until next year.
It’s not a done deal as yet and Pitt isn’t completely out of the picture, but it seems Craig in the most likely man for the Dragon Tattoo job.
