Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar for Milk, is getting into the comic book movie business, with THR reporting that he’s signed up to adapt Matt Kindt’s Dark Horse graphic novel, 3 Story: The Secret History of the Giant Man, for the big screen.
As the subtitle of the comic suggests, it follows Craig Pressgang, a giant man whose weird medical condition causes continual growth. The ‘3 Story’ name refers to the fact it’s told through the eyes of three people – his mother, wife and daughter – who relate the story from his birth to his eventual three storey height, with the tale exploring loneliness and love’s changing nature.
Although it’s not exactly X-Men, it fits with Black’s more art, thoughtful reputation. with Warner Bros. (who are backing the film) responding to Black’s take, which will focus on the father-daughter relationship and soften the melancholic ending.
Black has taken an interesting path since Milk, as the Oscar win could have ensured he made millions writing studio scripts, but he’s generally stuck to things he’s believed in, recently penning and producing episodes of Big Love (he has a Mormon background) and penning Clint Eastwood’s upcoming biopic of J. Edgar Hoover, as well as directing the as yet unreleased film What’s Wrong With Virginia, starring Emma Roberts and Jennifer Connelly.
