It seems that Ken Watanabe, the Japanese actor who we’ve seen being gruff and action-oriented in the likes of The Last Samurai, Batman Begins, Letters From Iwo Jima and Chris Nolan’s upcoming Inception is thinking about stepping behind the camera and directing a war movie.
According to Pajiba, the film in question is 442nd, which tells the true story of an American-Japanese group of soldiers assembled during World War II and sent on a virtual suicide misson in Europe. Despite the fact many of the soldiers families were locked up in internment camps, and their ancestry meant they were hated by many and therefore had to become a pretty much self-sufficient force, they fought with distinction, eventually becoming the most decorated unit in US military history.
At the moment it seems plans are pretty early on (Pajiba describes it as a rumour they have on pretty good authority), with producers currently trying to assemble the rest of the pieces.
