For years now, Warner has been flirting with the idea of remaking Logan’s Run, but never seems to actually be able to make it. Over the last decade numerous screenwriters have been brought in, with Bryan Singer at one point down to direct (before he bolted to make Superman Returns), and Ribert Schwentke, James McTeigue and Joseph Kosincki also flirting with the film at various points. However it seems they’ve found a new man to sit in the director’s chair, Carl Rinsch.
You may remember him as the commercials helmer who was going to direct the prequel to Alien, before his mentor, RIdley Scott, stepped in to take over. However that gave him plenty of momentum and since then he’s been attached to various other movies, with his move into film further bolstered by his excellent short film, The Gift, which sparked a bidding war for the feature rights a couple of months ago. While he’s still attached as director of the film version of The Gift (now called Small, and currently in story development) and to the Keanu Reeves starrer 47 Ronin, it now looks like he’s trying to find the time to fit Logan’s Run in too.
The 1976 version of Logan’s Run is set in a future where over-population means the law has been changed so when you reach the age of 30, your time is up and you have to die. If you don’t submit to this, you become a runner, and are hunted down by operatives known as Sandmen, with Logan a Sandman who’s forced to go on the run himself.
Despite being in development for over a decade, the new version is still a long way from getting to the screen, with THR reporting that once Rinsch officially signs up to direct, they’ll then hire a writer to pen a completely new version of the script. So don’t expect to see it for a couple of year yet.
