A couple of month ago, we reported that the makers of the comedy film MacGruber (which is based on SNL skits) were being sued by the makers of the 1980s TV series MacGyver. The MacGruber character was obviously inspired by and spoofing Richard Dean Anderson’s 1980s secret agent, who could get out of any sticky situation with just a rubber band and a paper clip, and the makers of the original series wanted their due.
They were also keen to sue because they said they had their own MacGyver movie plans, which were being put in jeopardy by MacGruber. However, with MacGruber hitting US theatres this weekend, New Line, which is developing the MacGyver film, decided it was a good time to say they haven’t given up on the character, and have hired a writer, Jason Richman (Bad Compant, Bangkok Dangerous), to penthe script. It suggests New Line is planning a straight-faced but fun film, which is pretty much their only option with MacGruber having already gone the spoof route.
Quite frankly though, no MacGyver film could beat the 1994 TV movie, ‘MacGyver: Lost Treasure Of Atlantis’, where is turns out that not only are the secrets of Atlantis hidden in caves under Exeter (of all places), but it also has Brian Blessed in it. What more could you want than that? (Source: THR)
