Last year MTV decided to try and remake Teen Wolf, ordering a pilot for a potential TV series. That pilot, directed by Russell Mulcahy (Highlander, Resident Evil: Extinction), is now in the can, and MTV seems so impressed with it that they’ve now committed to making an entire series. According to THR the new series will star Tyler Posey as a high school student who gets superpowers, including the ability to woo girls, after a wolf attack.
However, while this has the Teen Wolf name, it’s not exactly the light-hearted comedy the Michael J Fox film was, instead taking more inspiration from The Vampire Diaries, True Blood and Twilight that its 80s progenitor. We actually found out more recently when we exclusively interviewed director Russell Mulcahy. He told us, “The [Teen Wolf] pilot is not really a remake of the Michael J. Fox film. Its still about teenagers, but this isnt so much about the humour. This is much more scary and has a more serious tone. Obviously it still has humour in it, but we’re going for a much more serious tone and more scary.”
When asked whether lovers of the 80s movie would be upset, he said, “Well, I love the 80s one too. So we have not gone and tried to remake that. Instead its inspired by it, and then we take it at a different angle, so its a lot more real. The kids are real. The situation is more real. Its taken seriously in an entertaining way and with some humour in too but its more a mix of horror and some good humour. We always said though that it had to feel real and very now, so the music is very modern, except when it goes into score, and then it becomes very cinematic. But the classic Michael J. Fox movie is its own wonderful and very much cherished entity, and the new version is its own creature.”
It does make you wonder why they bothered keeping the Teen Wolf name, but it does sound kind of intirguing.
