Curiouser and curiouser. A few months ago, word leaked out that the Wachowskis (The Matrix, Speed Racer) might be making a secret movie nobody had heard anything about. The news came via tweets from Ariana Huffington (of Huffington Post fame), who posted some pics from the set and said “On plane to chicago to take part in the Wachowskis’ movie on iraq from the perspective of the future”.
Although later reports suggested the Matrix directors were only shooting test footage, the question remained as to what the film was – with the best guesses being it was Cloud Atlas, which they are supposed to be producing.
However according to Deadline, the film may be something very different, with the site describing it as being about a “‘hard R’ homosexual relationship between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi. It’s a cinema verite-style treatment that begins in the near future and then spans back over years that include the current war in Iraq.”
The script is apparently finished, Andy and Lana want to direct the movie as their next project and they’re now looking for fianciers. Although they’ve been very big budget in recent years, they first got noticed with the 1996 lesbian noir thriller Bound, and it would seem their new film takes them back towards this territory, while keeping some of the sci-fi aspects they’re now known for.
