While for most films a $37 US million opening weekend would seem pretty good (and I’m sure Universal will be touting it as such), with production costs estimated around the $200 million mark, there’s little doubt the makers of Robin Hood must have been hoping for a bit more – not least to have hit the number 1 spot on the US box office chart in the film’s first weekend in cinemas.
Unfortunately for Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe, Iron Man 2 hung on, adding another $53 million to take it over the $200 million mark in only 10 days, and stay top of the box office. However Robin Hood can take a bit of solace from the fact that it topped the non-US chart, taking a rather more impressive $74 million outside America in the 56 markets where it opened. That’s especially good considering it got a very muted response from critics.
There were two other new entries in the US top 10, the Amanda Seyrfried starring romance, Letters To Juliet, which took the third spot with $13.7 million, and the Queen Latifah comedy, Just Wright, which made $8.5 million to place fourth on the chart. Both films performed close to expectations.
