Iron Man 3 might be a way off, particularly as we have to get through the character’s 2012 appearance in the Avengers before he can go off on his own again on another adventure, but that hasn’t stopped director Jon Favreau hinting about the plans he’s got for the the metal-suited wonder.
That said, talking to MTV he admitted he’s got a problem, as while he could control what happened to Tony Stark between Iron Man 1 & 2, he doesn’t have too much say in what happens in the Marvel Universe in terms of how things are left at the end of The Avengers. He says, “I would like to [do another film]… Iron Man 3, to pay it off, there’s so much left to understand about what the world is going to be like then. You’ve got Thor, Captain America, Avengers all happening with different directors before Iron Man 3, and that’s all going to affect Iron Man 3.”
Despite this problem (and Favreau himself says that despite being an insider he’s unsure how they’re going to mix a tech superhero like Iron Man with the magic and supenatural elements of Thor), he’s still keen to make a third movie, and even has a few plans about what he wants to do, particularly in terms of the bad guy.
“You’ve got to do the Mandarin…The problem with the Mandarin is that the way it’s depicted in the comic books, you don’t want to see that. He has 10 magical rings – that just doesn’t feel right for our [franchise]. So it’s either tech-based, or the rings are not really rings. But maybe with Thor and all those others, you’ll introduce magic to that world and it won’t seem so out of place.”
However the plans may change, as Iron Man 3 is unlikely to start filming for another two years at least, and before then we’ve got a lot of exciting Marvel stuff coming our way that could change everything.
