Remember the days of Arnold Scwarzenegger movies? A halcyon era where the plots all coalesced into one, and the main thing was to have Arnie and a big gun, with the Austrian Oak dispatching a billion bad guys while butchering the English language? Well, it seems Fox is a bit nostalgic from that era, as Deadline reports they’re busy working on a remake of the 1985 Arnie pic, Commando.
The token plot for that one saw Arnie as, well, a retired commando, whose daughter is kidnapped. He’s told she’ll be killed unless he assassinates the rival of a nasty exiled dictator. However, this being the bemusccled one, he decides that instead he’s just going to go and kill every person involved in the kidnapping and rescue his daughter – preferably using as much violence as possible to achieve that aim.
David Ayer has been set to write and direct the new version. The Street Kings helmer is a great choice as he’s former Navy soldier himself, and has promised to put a real-world spin on the original premise. This means that instead of a brawny, pretty much indestrctible Austrian, the new hero will rely more on his skills in covert tactics and weaponry. To be honest, it’s another one of those films where it’s being called a remake, but it has such a generic premise they’re just hoping to use the name sell tickets. However it could be fun, as long as they keep the silly spirit of the first flick.
