Poor old Kirsten Dunst. When Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire dropped out of Spider-man 4 there was a lot of talk about them, but barely anyone mentioned that the Mary-Jane actress had just been done out of the job that was almost single-handedly keeping her career alive. Now she has to face the fact that she’s just a Penelope Cruz wannabe.
When Lars Von Trier first started talking about his new movie, Melancholia, it was Cruz who was going to star, but she then dropped out to make Pirates Of The Cariabbean: on Stranger Tides instead. Now Von Trier has picked her replacement, and it’ll be Dunst. I’m not quite sure how the director made that leap of logic, but there you go.
She’ll play the lead in what is being described as a sci-fi disaster movie, although with Von Trier, goodness knows what that actually means (probably a lot of misery, anger and women being abused). Deadline reports that Dunst will be joined by Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgaard, Stellan Skarsgaard and Udo Kier. Filming is due to start in July in Southern Sweden (Von Trier doesn’t fly, so everyone has to come to him).
