From the moment we discovered a few weeks ago who would be playing the lead role of Steve Rogers/Captain America (in case you’ve been living under a rock, it’s Chris Evans), speculation has moved across to who’ll be the female lead, a character called Peggy Carter.
Emily Blunt is said to have been offered the role but turned it down due to other commitments, while the producers also looked at the likes of Keira Knightley. Last week they were said to be narrowing in on their final choice, with Alice Eve rumoured to be at the top of the list, but as it turns out, she’s not the person who’s going to play the part either. Nope, the one who’s finally nabbed the coveted role is Hayley Atwell.
Although she’s not particularly well known at the moment, the British actress has appeared in the likes of Brideshead Revisited and The Duchess, had a major role in the recent reworking of the TV series The Prisoner and will soon be seen in the mini-series The Pillars Of The Earth.
In case you’re wondering who this Peggy Carter is, according the THR, ‘The character Atwell will play is named Peggy Carter, who in comics lore not only dated Captain America but was an agent helping the French Resistance. She later became the aunt of Sharon Carter, Captain Americas love in modern times.’
Captain Americs shoots this summer in the UK, with Joe Johnston directing.
