When it was announced a couple of weeks ago that Rose MacGowan had taken a role in Marcus Nispel’s Conan The Barbarian reboot, many wondered what this meant for Red Sonja. MacGowan has been attached to the Conan spin-off character for years, getting very close to making the movie with Robert Rodriguez at the helm several times (even releasing promotional posters for the film, which said it would be in cinemas last year), but thanks to funding problems, injuries and whatever other excuse they could come up with, it still hasn’t happened, but MacGowan has continually said that it would go ahead at some point.
Now it seems she is indeed off the project and that the initial Red Sonja plans have been scrapped. That’s not to say that a Red Sonja movie won’t be made, just that the incarnation that’s been planned over the last few years has been put to one side, with director Douglas Aarniokoski (who took over from Rodriguez) leaving the flick and the people behind the film looking for new writers. The current plan is to make Conan first, and then spin Red Sonja off that, with Pajiba suggesting it could be Megan Fox rather than Rose MacGowan in the metal bikini.
To be honest, I think we should treat the Fox news with a slight amount of suspicion, as at the mometn it amounts to the makers wanting Fox to star, rather than the actress showing any interest. Well of course they want Fox, she’s the current top choice for every hot-woman role in Tinsel Town, but that doesn’t mean she’ll take to role. And with Red Sonja’s troubled history, there’s still no guarantee the movie will ever get made.
