A couple of months ago it was revealed that Penelope Cruz had signed up for a role in Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, although at the time, no one was saying what the part may be. That’s now been cleared up thanks to Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who spoke to MTV and revealed that “She plays the daughter of Blackbeard. She’s the daughter of the bad guy… She brings a lot of humor to it. And the fact that she’s so feisty,” adding that there will be “a little romance between [Depp’s] Captain Jack and the character that Penelope plays.”
Well, it’s about time they gave the Captain a proper love interest, just so we don’t have to have any more soppiness between Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. Ian McShane will play the main villain, Blackbeard himself, who Bruckheimer insists is “the nastiest pirate ever.”
The plot of the film follows Jack Sparrow’s search for the Fountain Of Youth, presumably vying with Blackbeard as to who can get there first. Shooting begins in June.
Incidentally, while we’re talking about Penelope Cruz, according to Allocine (via /Film), although she had been rumoured as the main star of Lars Von Trier’s disaster movie, Melancholia, she’s since dropped out and the director is likely to replace her with his Antichrist collaborator, Charlotte Gainsbourg. It’s interesting as few actresses have worked with him twice, several of them complaining about what a horrible experience it was, but Gainsbourg doesn’t seem to mind.
