Disney’s massive publicity blitz for Alice In Wonderland certainly seems to have paid off, with the film taking an enormous $116 million in its first weekend in the US. The huge take means the movie has nabbed a few box office records, including the biggest winter opening weekend ever, the biggest opening for a Tim Burton film, the largest first weekend for a non-sequel release and the biggest 3D debut ever.
Alice has certainly been a huge success, especially considering that early March is normally seen as a weak time to release movies.
However there’s currently a huge momentum behind big, CG filled 3D movies and Alice In Wonderland’s success suggests that Avatar is having a knock-on effect, encouraging people to try out other three-dimensional movies. Worldwide it’s believed the film made $210 million, as it opened simultaneously in 41 other countries.
Alice left all other movies trailing in its wake, with the second place movie, Brooklyn’s Finest, making a comparatively paltry $13.5 million in its first weekend. Those were the only two new movies in the US Top 10, with the rest made up of holdovers. Perhaps impressively though, despite Alice In Wonderland soaking up nearly all the 3D screens, Avatar still managed to add another $7.7 million, taking its total in the US to a gargantuan $720 million.
