Although it was initially touted as a theatrical release, it seems Universal has scaled back its plans for Death Race 2, and will now bring the movie out straight-to-DVD. THR also reports that Sean Bean has joined the cast of the film, playing a mob boss in the follow-up to the 2008 Jason Statham flick.
The movie is a prequel, serving as an origin story for the character of Frankenstein, played by Statham in the first film but replaced by Goss in the prequel. However it is actually a different person, as Statham’s character was forced to take over the ‘role’ of Frankenstein in the titular Death Race after the death of the original driver, while Goss will be the person who first made the mask-wearing character famous in the deadly reality TV show. The film will be set at the point where the Death Race first emerges and convicted cop killer Luke (aka Franestein) is forced to compete.
Filming has already started in South Africa, with Roel Raine behind the camera. I don’t think we should expect a masterpiece, although it could be kind of fun.
