Despite competition from Kevin Smith’s Cop Out and Breck Eisner’s The Crazies, Martin Scorsese held onto the top spot at the US box office for a second week with Shutter Island, which already makes the movie one of the biggest box office successes of the director’s career. It’s particularly impressive consering the film’s middling reviews, but suggest it’s getting pretty decent word of mouth from cinemagoers.
It was Kevin Smith’s Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, that took 2nd place, with $18.5 million. That’s not a bad opening for late February and was probably helped by the fact there’s a lack of all-out comedies around at the moment. Breck Eisner’s surprisingly well received remake of George A Romero’s The Crazies also had a solid opening with $16.5 million, for a third place finish.
They were the only new entries in the top 10, in what was a fairly quiet week at the US box office, although further down the list, Valentine’s Day passed the $100 million mark. After the traditional doldrums of February, things really start gearing up next weekend with the release of Alice In Wonderland, which looks like it going to set the box office on fire.
