The four-day results are in for the Presidents Day weekend in the US, and it seems releasing Valentine’s Day at Valentine’s was a smart plan, as it pulled in an impressive $66 million during its opening bow, to easily top the chart. The Garry Marshall film, which stars all manner of Hollywood talent, defied bad reviews to draw in romantic couples. Work on a sequel started before the film was released, a decision that seems more than justified in light of the film’s opening.
In second place was Percy Jackson, which scored a decent if unspectacular $38.7 million in its first weekend. Fox will undoubtedly be looking to see how it does over the coming weeks to see if it’s worth making a sequel. The family fantasy narrowly beat out The Wolfman, which made $36.4 million, far more than many had expected due to almost universally poor reviews. However the film will live or die on word of mouth over the coming weeks.
Avatar once again impressed, taking another $30 million over the four-day weekend. While a small bump because of the holiday might be expected, even over the Friday-Sunday period it only dropped 5%, which is remarkable. Its overall US gross now stands at $667 million.
