The enigmatic figure that is Terrence Malick is prepping a new movie, and this time he’s going for romance. Much of the director’s mystique still likes in the fact that following Badlands in 1973 and Days Of Heaven in 1978, he disappeared from cinema completely, only re-emerging in 1998 with The Thin Red Line.
Although he’s certainly been more active since then, in the past 12 years the only other movie he’s got in the can is The New World, although he does have The Tree Of Life, starring Sean Penn and Brad Pitt, due out later this year.
Now Variety reports that he’s working on a currently untitled romance, which is due to star Christian Bale, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko. Unsurprisingly for a Malick movie, plot details are pretty much non-existent (we still don’t really know what The Tree Of Life is about), other than that the producers have said it “brings a unique perspective to this powerful and moving love story”.
It was recently said that Malick was vying with with Kathryn Bigelow to make a film about a kidnapped journalist in Afghanistan, but with this new romance set to shoot in the autumn, it would seem he’s plumped for this movie instead.
