Whatever happened to Orlando Bloom? With Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean he was everywhere, but since then it’s almost like he’s dropped off the face of the planet. However it looks like he’s ready for a return, with Sympathy For Delicious due out this year, and now THR reporting that he’s signed up for The Good Doctor.
Doctor is described as an indie Hitchcockian thriller, about a frustrated doctor looking to impress his superiors and colleagues. When his 18-year-old patient, admitted for a kidney infection, provides him with the esteem he so craves, the doctor tampers with her treatment so that she’ll have to stay at the hospital with him. Sounds lovely, I always wonder why they don’t make more films about doctors making their patients sicker.
Also starring in the movie will be Michael Pena, Troy Garity, Courtney Ford, Taraji P. Henson, Rob Morrow and J.K. Simmons. Shooting in due to begin in LA this week.
What I want to know though, is whether Bloom’s absence from the screen and return in indie projects was his own choice, or is Hollywood no longer interested in him outside Pirates and Rings? After those big-budget effects driven movies you can certainly understand him wanting to make something smaller, but he could do with a commerical success soon if he doesn’t want Tinsel Town to forget him.
