A week ago we reported that Warner was busy deciding whether to turn their upcoming, big budget Clash of The Titans remake three-dimensional, with a post production refit that would give a bit of depth to the originally 2D movie. Well, according THR, the studio is so excited about the possibilities of 3D retrofits to movies initially filmed in 2D, that they won’t just be converting Clash of The Titans, they’re also gonna make the last two Harry Potter movies three-dimensional as well.
It won’t be the Potter franchise’s first flirtation with 3D, as Half Blood Prince included a few 3D scenes that were only shown at IMAX venues.
At the moment Warner is refusing to confirm the news, but it appears that the tests they’ve done with Clash of The Titans footage have convinced them that it’s worth spending the $5 million per movie to convert Titans and the Deathly Hallows movies for 3D screens.
In order to allow for the changes and move it out of the way of Dreamworks Animation’s 3D flick, How To Train Your Dragon, Clash Of The Titans will be pushed back a week, getting released on April 2nd instead of March 26th. The two Deathly Hallows movies are still due November 19th, 2010, and July 15th, 2011.
While converting 2D films into 3D ones has had decidedly mixed results in the past, hopefully the process that’s got Warner so excited works better than some of the previous efforts. Either way it’s yet more evidence that Hollywood is now thinking that in a post-Avatar world, potential blockbusters have to be in 3D or they’re going to lose out.
