Ever since Warner Bros purchased Midway Games in 2008 there have been low rumblings that the studio wanted to make another Mortal Kombat movie. However there’s been very little news on the project, other than that Warner were thinking about rebboting it for the big screen (rumours a new film would shoot last September proved to be unfounded). However Bloody Disgusting reports that there’s now a little more momentum behind the Mortal Kombat reboot, as Oren Eziel in talks to write it.
Although Uziel isn’t a well-known name, his script, Shimmer Lake, made the 2009 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. It seems the do-over is still at a very early stage, so there’s no never on the direction they’re taking.
It’s perhaps not surprising that Hollywood would be sniffing around Mortal Kombat again, as while it’s not exactly a game you’d think would make a good movie, the 1995 film is one of the few incredibly profitable video adaptations (although the 1997 sequel was a bit of a disaster). I wouldn’t be shocked if this remake fell by the wayside, but we’ll have to wait and see.
