It’s almost inevitable that at some point pretty much every person who’s ever made a film is going to be rumoured as the director of the Spider-man reboot – until Sony actually hire someone, that is. The latest to join the list of possibilities, alongside (500) Days Of Summer director Marc Webb, is Nimrod Antal, director of Armored and the upcoming Predators.
According to QuietEarth, “The whole story goes like this: Sam Raimi met Nimrod on the Sony lot before his first US film, Vacancy. They clicked, so Sam hired him to direct Armored [which Raimi produced]. Now, Predators is getting some great word-of-mouth around tinsel-town. Warners loves it and now Sam Raimi and Sony want the director back at the studio to helm Spiderman.”
If true, this would suggest Raimi still has a say in what happens to the franchise next. When he left Spider-man 4, it sounded like he severing all ties and had pretty much fallen out with the studio, but this makes it seem as if he’ll still be around as a producer (which he may well be, as his contract may afford him that position even if he doesn’t direct).
At the moment though I’d take most of these rumours about a Spidey reboot director with a pinch of salt, as it’s very early days and at the moment Sony is likely just weighing up its options and taking meetings.
Like I said though, expect every other director in the world to be rumoured for the job over the coming weeks, whether there’s any evidence for it or not.
