A few weeks ago it was announced that the specs for 3D Blu-ray had been finalised and since then all sorts of tech companies have stepped forward with plans for further 3D TV screens, television channels and more, as part of a big push to get people to buy into having three dimensional entertainment in the home.
However while the 3D Blu-ray specs were finalised, there wasn’t any news on what discs would actually be released, or when. Now Sony has stepped forward to fill the void, saying that it will begin release 3D Blu-rays in the US this summer, starting with Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatball.
Although the company gave no specific date, the release will coincide with Sony bringing out their 3D-ready Sony Bravia TVs and 3D compatible Blu-ray players. It not surprising Sony is jumping in first to release content, as the company hopes 3D Blu-ray will further help their HD format, although with most people needing a new TV and BD player to get next-gen 3D in the home, it’s unlikely there’ll be many takers for 3D Blu-ray just yet.
However, as yet there’s been no announcement on when 3D Blu-ray will hit the UK, although I’d be surprised if the first discs weren’t released before the end of the year. (Source: THR)
