Torrentfreak has released its annual list of the most pirated movies of the year. As usual, the list is dominated by major blockbusters that also made a lot of money legitimately, as well as a few surprise entries where you wonder what on earth they’re doing there.
The most pirated film was Star Trek, which was downloaded nearly 11 million times. Transformers 2 came in at number two, with 10.6 million downloads. However Guy Ritchie’s RockNRolla made a surprise showing at number three with 9.4 million downloads. The film only made $25 million at cinemas around the world, but for some reason the pirate crowd couldn’t get enough of it.
There were a couple of other surprise showings, with Ridley Scott’s State Of Play making it to number eight with 7.4 million downloads and Alex Proyas’ Knowing also scraped into the list at number 10 with 6.9 million downloads.
It’s also a bit of a surprise that X-Men Origins: Wolverine only made it to number 9 on the list, following the high profile leaking of a workprint a month before the film hit cinemas.
