When Warner took over the running of DC Comics a couple of months ago, there was a lot of talk about how they were going to set to work earnestly trying to bring a lot more of the companies superhero characters to the big screen, so that the DC stable wasn’t lagging so far behind Marvel in the big screen stakes. However since then there’s been very little news on what they plan to do.
However a rumour has started over at Pajiba, which says that they have info that the next movie adaptation out of the DC stable might be Hawkman. Although not the best known of superheroes amongst the general popualce, neither was Iron Man until that movie came along and blew audieces away, so there’s no particular reason a film version of Hawkman couldn’t work.
As with Green Lantern though, there hasn’t just been one superhero with that name over the years, and the mantle has been passed along to several people, ranging from his original 1940 appearance as Carter Hall, who was the reincarnation of the ancient egyptain Prince Khufu and discovered that the ‘Nth metal’ could allow him to fly, to Charley Parker, Zauriel and Katar Hol. However as Hall is still the main one, who uses ancient weaponry and artificial wings to help him battle evil, it’s probably that one they’ll go for.
Warner is currently putting the project out to writers, to see if anyone can come up with a workable script. Although it won’t be the easiest of superheroes to adapt for the modern age, if Thor is successful, it’s possible Warner will try to leverage that to make a hit out of Hawkman.
It’s more than possible this one will get trapped in development, but I reckon it actually sounds like it could be rather cool.
