It’s almost surprising nobody in Hollywood has picked up the rights to the late Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo before, as it’s sold over 1.5 million copies and would seem to be perfect for a screen adaptation. Now Sony has picked up the rights to the book, which is the first of three novels in the Millennium Series.
The novels are about journalist/investigator Mikael Blomkvist and computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, who get involved with life-threatening mysteries and expose the institutions that pull the strings behind the scenes. In The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Blomkvist looks into a 40-year-old possible murder, which takes them into the world of the dysfunctional, island-bound Vanger family.
Stephen Zaillian (Schindler’s List, Gangs Of New York) is in talks to write the screenplay for the movie. The book has already been turned into a successful Swedish-language thriller, which has been having success across Europe and will arrive in the UK in March.
Larsson’s books were only discovered after he died, and have since becoming a publishing sensation.
