UK production company Future Films has made a bit of a niche for itself making biopics. Following Fifty Dead Men Walking and Goodbye Bafana, it’s planning a movie about legendary opera Diva, Maria Callas, which will simply be titled, Callas.
Screen Daily reports that Future is co-producing a film about the soprano with Italy’s De Angelis Group, based on the biography, ‘So Proud, So Fragile’, by Alfonso Signorini. However rather than looking at the whole of her life, the film will concentrate on Callas’ tempestuous relationship with billionaire shipping magnate, Aristotle Onassis.
The relationship, which lasted from the late-50s to late-60s saw Callas stepping back from the opera world, after she tired of the scandals that surrounded her and realised her voice was diminishing. However despite her attempt to be more normal, the relationship was rocked by endless problems and Onassis eventually left Callas for Jackie Kennedy.
There’s no news yet on when the film might go into production, although let’s hope this Callas biography has more luck than others, which have fallen by the wayside before they went in front of the camera.
