The Blind Side Beats Out New Moon – Sandra Bullock drama tops the US box office its 3rd weekend

6th December 2009 By Tim Isaac

The Blind Side is certainly showing impressive staying power at US cinemas. Last weekend it made more money than it did in its first weekend, and this week it climbed over The Twlight Saga: New Moon to top the box office. The real-life drama, starring Sandra Bullock has benefitted from fantastic word of mouth, with people flocking to see the story of a woman who takes in a homeless boy and helps him become a professional football player. The movie added another $20 million to its gross to come top of the box office pile, beating out New Moon for the top spot. That said the Twlight film probably won’t mind too much, as it’s $15.7 million weekend took it past the $250 million mark.

The top new entry on the list was the Oscar bait drama Brothers, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman, about a man who comforts his sister-in-law after his brother goes missing in Afghanistan. The film made an okay $9 million to place third, following some good reviews.

The low budget action movie Armored entered the list at number six, with a respectable $6.6 million (it was showing on the fewest screens of any movie in the top 10). The final new entry was the Robert De Niro movie, Everybody’s Fine, about a father who goes on a road trip to reunite with his grown children. Its $2.0 million gross was enough for 10th place, but it wasn’t a particularly auspicious start for the film.

Outside the top 10, there’s was a notable 13th place entry for Jason Reitman’s new George Clooney starrer, Up In The Air, which made $1.1 million from only 16 screen. With the movie generating considerable Oscar buzz, expect it to enter the top 10 in the next few weeks as it expands to more cinemas.

Take a look below for the full top 10 at the US box office for the weekend of December 4th-6th.
